I moved to Chicago at the age of 22, right after college. Though Ann had been my stepsister for 6 years, we had not spent much time together and I barely knew her. Before too long I got to know her and the de Brauw clan quite well. Ann made me feel as if I were truly part of her family while I was there those 3 1/2 years and for many years thereafter. She exposed me to the most delicious ethnic foods (favorites were Ethiopian and Indonesian) and taught me how to bake fruit pies; the many dinners at the Main Street house and in Chicago restaurants were always full of laughter and debate. I will miss her deeply.
