We were across-the-street neighbors in Evanston for over a decade as our children grew up. We shared meals, stories, and the easy comraderie as well as grand theft when Chris and I, one summer evening and in front of Ann and all the kids, dressed like Ninjas and climbed into a neighbor's back yard to steal -- perhaps liberate is the more proper term-- some ripe sour cherries that were just being under utilized. Ann was, through all of this, including the immaturity of her husband and her neighbor, full of good cheer, delighted with the amusements, grounded in her family, and so full of palpable love for the juice, the fun, of life. She always made things brighter, more focused, more fun with her presence. We have since moved away and are saddened by the story of Ann's struggles toward the end, but in the reflection that her passing brings there are very warm and fun memories of her and our times with her which help ease the force of the blow.
